Last night while towing a trailer with faulty light wiring I drove about an hour with no TC lockup. Turns out the running lights shorted to the brake light circuit. Interesting thing is that the truck drove really good with no TC lockup, noticably quicker response when accelerating. Trans temps went up about 20 deg, but the big cooler I installed kept the peak temp just over 180, so no real worries there. I wouldn't want to run with no lockup all the time, but it would be a cool option to have if it wouldn't hurt the (freshly rebuilt) tranny.
So, any thoughts on this? Would I kill my new tranny?
Oh yeah, it's the truck in my sig, 92 F350-460-E4OD-4X4
There was a thread here about a year ago on that issue with a lot of good info. You could maybe go thru the back pages to find it.
From what I remember you have to put a resistor in the circuit somewhere to stop the computer throwing a code.
An unlocked converter will cause the trans temp to rise indeed and excessive temps over a long period could cause the converter to balloon. IMO the conveter is the weak link in an E4OD and if it fails, it could take out the rest of the transmission.
If you want to keep the converter unlocked, you could install a switch to keep it from locking, or turn your hazard lights on while driving.
