Mileage Help?
On the other hand, I have logged every drop of fuel, and every mile driven, in a spreadsheet.
I know what my averages are, exactly.
Non-towing average, combined city and highway = 12.87
Best ever on the highway = 18.38
Worst ever, all city = 10.31
Towing 5,000# average = 11.22
Overall average, every mile divided by every gallon = 12.05
Keep in mind that most of my highway miles are towing. I rarely go very far without the travel trailer. And therefore most of my non-towing miles are city, and that slants my averages downward.
My V10s averge is just .5 mpg below that, is that normal for the diesel to get that low mpg ?
yes, so it seems.. the overall mileage has gone down since the 7.3l days, but emission control is up so that is to be expected. I think the difference (what I expect to happen for me) is that it evens out.. more consistent
I was hoping for 10mpg while towing 7000lbs behind our suburban last month, and got just under 7 (over 3300 miles). 12 would be fantastic!! (more even better).. I can't wait for my first distance test in the new F350.. (end of the month)
The suburban gets 14 not towing.
I don't believe you would be that close with a V-10 if you duplicated the driving that I do. For example, my highway average, unloaded, hammer down, is 17.14. The highway is home for the diesel, and your V-10 can't match that. Unfortunately, as I said, I don't do much of that driving. Wife and I are taking a 2,500 mile drive without the TT this month for the first time. My averages should come up a little from that.
But worst of all for me is that my daily commute is 2.5 miles one way. The diesel doesn't get warmed up, and I only get a solid 10 mpg. That's not good for a diesel either, but that's my lot in life. Your V-10 would be a lot better for me in that regard, and your mileage would probably about match the diesel.
When it comes to towing, I only pull the small trailer mentioned in my sig, but I do it climbing Sierra Mtn grades. The guys I know with V-10's, including one in an Excursion, get 7 mpg going North. I personally got 7 mpg pulling the same trailer in my '04 F150 with the 5.4L. So when I got 11 with the F250 diesel, I was happy with that.
You have to know the type of driving whenever comparing mileage numbers. But for me, those are the numbers, weep or rejoice as you see fit.
that is more like what I thought.
Still disappointing, what happend to the days of the 6.9,7.3,7.3psd MPG?
When ford when from the 460 to the V10, they gained a lot even .
why not with the diesel? Do smog parts hurt the diesel more than the gasser?
Yes! Cooled EGR is the DEVIL!!!
All trucks with the 6.0 have EGR, those of us "fortunate" enough to have the 6.4 have EGR and a DPF. Each causes significant decresases in MPG.
bpounds- I never said anything about the V10!
No, but you expressed surprise at my low mpg's, so I was attempting to explain why they are lower than you might expect.
I would say this to anyone considering a diesel - don't buy one because you think it will be economical to own, whether for mileage, longevity, whatever. The math just doesn't support that. And if your budget is such that you have to worry about mileage, you probably should not buy one.
"If you have to ask, you can't afford it."

Also, you make a great point about the economics of owning a diesel. There are things that can be done to control costs, but overall it is a more expensive engine to run. I knew this going in, and this is why I didn't want one at first! Seems that more are being aware of this as time goes on, which might explain why mine sat on the lot for so long...
I have to say that if something happened to my truck I wouldn't go for another diesel. Not because I don't like it, but because I don't think I could get as good of a deal again. And without the $12K off I got, it wouldn't be worth it!
