Well I took the rad off and the grill, spun the crankshaft with a 15/16 socket and the gear that the distributor runs off didnt move a lick in one complete turn. How hard is it to replace the timing change and still want to know how SEEING AS the Haynes manual tells you how to do the stuff you know how to, like taking the radiator off, but dont tell you how to pull the timing chain!?? What all do you have to take off the front of the motor. Water pump? Fan? PS pump and alternator? already took the fan off though
Yup all that... getting the radiator out of the way is always good, fan pump, anything mounted to the housing... Its really not that bad, but the first time, is uncharted waters for ypu, it will seem worse then it is...
Putting it back together will be w breeze... just make sure any surface with a gasket is cleaned well
and what all are you talking about remove from the housing the motor itself?? Take the water pump off? And dont i have to lift the motor off the mounts in order to get the oil pan off?
Non offense taking, but this is just one of my old mud trucks. And I don't plan on spending much money on it. I work with Nissans 300ZX both Z31 and Z32's. I have had this truck since I was 12 and built it to my likings. I have thought about taking it to get professionally worked on but dont have the time between high school and work. I just need to know what I have to do to be able to take the timing chain off. I'm not a mall crawler or a poser, by all means. This truck is highly built dynoed at 421 hp. All the work was done by myself. I mounted the motor in the truck and let my brother put all the stuff on the front and paid him. He is workin offshore and cant call but once every two weeks. I figured somebody here would know but know im questioning my thoughts.

Its not that hard of a job if you have some mechanical experiance , you should have a shop manual for a 351 M . Just remove any of the AC , power steering , ect , brackets that are bolted to the waterpump or timing cover & swing them out of the way , remove the water pump & balencer . You will need a banlencer puller to do this , then remove the timing cover , remove cam gear , crank gear & chain . Replace chain & gears , there is a mark on the gears that you have to line up , it will show you in the manulal . Cam gear mark at 6 oclock , crank gear mark at 12 oclock , you can turn the crank & cam by hand to get them to line up . You will need the timing cover & pump gasket sets . Just read the manual good and you should be ok , the timing will need to be set after your done ... Lew
Not sure how far you want to get into this motor ?? I would pull a valve cover & take a look , bent push rods will tell you if you have more problems...Lew
