So I am looking to get an 2000-2008 F-250. I prefer the 7.3L but also like the triton v10. So I have found a 2002 F-250 7.3L but it has 280k mi, the other one I'm looking at is a 2001 with the triton v10 and it has 170k mi. My question is which one is the better choice? What is the average life of the diesel vs the gas? Any help is much appreciated
Just my opinion, keep looking for something with less/fewer miles. Both of these choice are getting into an area of either being on borrowed time or greatly needed maintance.
And the above statement is based only on engine life.
Taken into account that you are looking at older/high mileage truck, I am assuming that you may not have a reserve fund set aside for needed or soon needed repairs, which can run into the need for deep pockets. However, given the two trucks that you offer for consideration. I would think that the V-10 would be the least costly to repair or replace should worst case Murphys Law set in.
The diesel one is going for 10k and the gas is going for 7.5k. I plan on using alot in the winter as it will be too cold to ride my motorcycle to work everyday. Once spring comes I will be using to go to and from work on bad weather days and hauling the bike to track days and races. I plan to drive it till it dies. I know that the carafax on the diesel one did not mention any major repairs done.
From that info, you don't need a diesel. You also don't need to pay the extra money, and it has a lot more miles. I would rule that one out.
The one with the V-10 sounds better, and that's not a bad price. At 170k, if it's been well taken care of it can have a lot of life left. Just save up some money, and figure you will need a tranny. I just realized, you didn't say they were automatic, and I just assumed they both were. The 4R100 auto isn't the strongest thing, and if it's the original you have to figure the odds are it's not got much left.
The old saw about the diesel lasting so much longer than a gasser just isn't true. Don't let that play into this. Go for the one with 100k fewer miles. Lots of V-10's go 250-300k miles.
Also, the lower price of the gasser would just about pay for the new tranny.
Forgot to say, welcome to FTE. We're glad you are here.
I would look for something with lower miles also. Those are getting to the point where some major repairs will be needed. Unless full maintenance records were available I would pass on both of them.
