Cool dot #'s for front parking lights

do any of you guys/gals have DOT makings on your 53-56 F-100 front parking/tun lights? The after market ones that I have on my truck have none, and the DMV requires the numbers in order for me to register my truck. This is all because I put a 56 cab and doors on my 54, and had to get a new VIN. They assigned me the VIN, but now it has to be registered as an "2009 custom." That is why I need DOT #'s for the lights.

Hi Lowtower - Welcome to FTE!

That's messed up - New York, eh? Why didn't you use the VIN that was stamped in the frame? And why on earth do they want DOT numbers on the parking lights? STUPID!

Here's what I would do. I'd find the VIN on the frame and go back to them and tell them you are going to title/register it as a 1954 using that VIN. This hole is just going to get deeper and deeper.

Undoubtedly what they want to do is charge you fees for a 2009 commercial truck.

I've never heard of DOT markings on 1/2 ton truck parts from our era.

Hopefully one of our New York People will chime in soon!

I don't know if the DMV guys can read , but check this out:

Believe it or not, no federal standards for lighting existed until '68:

(from the link's article)
"The U.S. continued with state lighting regulations until the U.S. federal government passed
the Motor Vehicle Safety Act in 1966. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
(NHTSA) was created in 1968. Within a few years, U.S. federal government regulations were
established for lighting, which were originally, in most cases, the existing SAE lighting standards."

The upshot is, there was no such thing as DOT in the '50's. If titleing your truck as a new construction requires DOT lighting all around, you're likely screwed.

You are absolutely right Ross. I'm just wondering what else they are going to insist on to meet 2009 standards?

Just a guess... 3-point seat belts, back-up lights, dual rear view mirrors, and self-cancelling turn signals. Air bags?? Catalytic converter??

I don't see how they could require any of that, but the DMV guy may just not be aware of what's what. I can see where there could be a requirement for DOT lighting on headlights, but OEM-appearing park/turn signal lights ought to be grandfathered.
