all right I know you guys cover this quite a bit but I got my pans in from lmc and I wanted some tips before I got started. several guys at work told me to cut out all the rust and put the full new pan straight over the old metal and the open hole a and weld it on. but I thought I would just cut out all the rust plus a couple inches of clean metal and then cut th ereplacement pan to fit the hole I I cut out and make sure toi leave some overlap to weld to. another question I have is my pan is rusting out about half way up the cab mount, wil it hurt to cut the old pan off about half way up the cab mount aslong as I wel the new pan back to the cab mount? do I need to support the cab while I cut the old floor of the part of the cab mount to keep the cab from falling through the mount. the cab mounts are good but some one has already tried to patch the floor with crappy sheet metal and its rusted the through expsoing the cab mount.
Never overlap old and new floor pans. Just cut out the bad and then make a template out of cardboard. Transfer that to the new pans and cut out. If you have a bender (not sure if it can do it or not) make a small flange and drill holes out. Fill the holes with weld and then go all the way around skipping around as to not over heat the metal. As far as wear the cab mount are it would be a good idea to go ahead and support it. Rather be saffe than sorry.
I have my driverside cut out right now. It has been sitting like that for about a month now, I know I know....get it done. But anyways the cab seems to be fine and hasn't sagged any from it. I cut out extra metal past the rusted areas, this way I know I got all the rust out. I plan on overlapping my new pans onto the existing metal. If you do plan to do it like this, invest in some weld through primer...it is expencive! I can post some pics tomorrow when I get off work.
