5.8 efi intake question
5.8 efi intake question
This pic is of a '92 5.8 lower intake manifold. I need to know what the threaded hole is for.

I have a '95 intake that has the same hump cast in but has no hole. That seems to be the only difference between them. They have the exact same Ford part numbers, tho one was cast by Alcan ('92) ond the other by Canam? ('95).
I'm trying to decide which I can use. I'd like to use the '95 as the wiring is in a bit better shape and the is probably less time on the injectors, but I'll use the '92 if I must.
I'm also looking to get rid of the egr junk, if possible. Is this hole a part of that?
Thanks,
Rob

As far as I know, the threaded hole in the first picture is not used by anything. The hole is empty on my '87 5.0 and I don't remember seeing anything attached to that hole on the '90 5.8 manifold I have either. The last picture is the air injection system, not EGR.
I have a 5.8 as well and mine never had anything mounted in that hole either. EPNCSU2006 is correct, that is the air injection system parts, part of the emissions equipment though. Pointing out the obvious (I excel at pointing out the obvious), if the wiring and injectors are a concern they could always be swapped from intake to intake.
Yes the air injection system can be deleted just retain the TAB and TAD solenoids over by the coil and make sure they are electrically connected to prevent codes. You can however remove the vacuum lines attached to them, be sure to retain the vacuum lines for the FPR and EGR.
Thanks for your replies.
I wasn't sure if some sort of sensor was supposed to go there or what. It's a pretty large hole and has a bit of a cavity behind the threads, although I found no little connecting passages or anything. I guess I'll just plug it to keep it from collecting gunk.
I actually have to use the '92 with the hole because I was unable to get that tower fitting at the radiator hose inlet off of the '95. I mean that sucker is on there. I soaked it with WD40 for two days, put so much pressure on the open end 1" wrench that I rounded off the flats, put a small pipe wrench on it with a 3' cheater pipe and still couldn't get it loose. I quit before I broke the manifold.
Here's the '92 lower after todays work,

I cleaned the injectors as per FordFuelInjection, then masked the tops and bottoms and painted them with 500* flat black as there was a bit of rusting on some of the metal bodies, installed new o-rings, powered them to test and clean the insides. All seem crisp and clean now. Cleaned the fuel rails inside and out. Everything looking good. New sensors and regulator on Tues.
Tomorrow is the upper manifold and throttle body. All black again, I think, except for the Ford 5.8 EFI lettering which I will buff out and then coat with some 500* Clear to try to stop any oxidization. Never have used that before, tho. Don't know how it will work out.
And I actually knew that pic was of the air injection. It was late and I must have been tired when I wrote that, but thanks for pointing out my error.
And thanks foe those details, Paul. I do want to keep the EGR, at least for now.
So, thanks, guys,
Rob
