Cold Air Intake???

Do you guys think upgrading to a K&N cold air intake kit is worth it. I have seen post were other people clam to see an increase in fuel mileage and performance and then i have seen post that claim they were as useless as **** on a boar hog.

The stock intake is a real cold air intake.. meaning it pulls air from outside the engine bay. This is good because it's usually a lot hotter in there and cooler air makes more power, any system that uses an open air filter under the hood is not a cold air intake so shop wisely. The other thing to consider is how the intake affects the MAF meter(if so equipped), and they all do to some extent. Oil saturated filters will contaminate the MAF sensor element which will affect it's performance over time, and open air filters attached directly to the meter change how the air column is presented to the meter, and this changes the readings they make. Dyno tests have shown that on a MAF vehicle equipped with an open filter the fan wash is enough to disrupt the MAF readings and reduce power, the same would happen at highway speeds from wind turbulance. If the engine is built enough to require significantly more airflow then stock a filter and intake upgrade can produce more power, but on a stock or mildly warmed over motor it's not restrictive.

If you want more power, save your money and buy long tube headers. Cold (hot) air intakes are worthless.

The FIPK or similar "cold air" intakes actually suck in hot air. They are about useless if you ask me. I had one on my truck for a little while and all it did was sound cool. The fuel economy was worse and in hot weather the power felt sluggish.

You would be better off with a KN or similar drop in filter or just a Motorcraft paper one and the I6/460 tube. This tube goes next to the radiator from the air box insead of on top of the radiator like the 5.0/5.8 one does.

I have a KN replacement filter and the I6/460 tube on mine now and it runs better than it has in a long time.
