hi, i am new to forum, and need alittle advice. my ranger is making a pinging noise basically all the time now! cold engine, not so bad ping, hot engine really pinging. bought new and has 190000 miles, 90% hwy miles. have always serviced oil/3000 miles which means alot of oil changes.(i drive 100miles a dayto work). all filters changed regularly( fuel, pcv, trans) all fluids once a year(front to back, whether needs it or not), plugs yearly. so i maintain this truck very well, all motorcraft parts. starts and sounds like a champ, and i get good gas mileage. i have read alot of posts on this subject in this forum, and would like some advice on what to do first myself before a shop looks at it. i am single mom, and i have always done all service myself. i have always used octane gas manual has said to use. i have read several things to consider, maf, egr, carbon build up, timing chain, i just don't know where to start first, please help! this is my only vechicle and i have tried to keep it running good, as i can't afford new one! i love my ranger
Try a tank of Chevron Super unleaded in it. Their fuel has Techron in it which is a cleaning agent for the fuel system and carbon deposits on the pistons and valves. Pinging is pre-ignition which means the fuel is being ignited in the cylinder before the spark plug is actually firing. This is usually due to carbon buildup on the pistons and exhaust valves. I hope this helps.
truck was making a pinging noise, put in one tank super unlead and truck is brand new again. no more noise, thanks alot, that really worked for me, thanks for the advice
I have the 3.0 in my ranger and I only run super unleaded in it. I have used the lower grade fuel and it always pings when I do. I am glad that helped with your problem.
