i was under my truck today and i noticed that my front engine cover or timing cover? Was a little damp up torwed the top were the exhaust tube for the senser runs,im not shure on the name of the tube.but any way there was a spot about 2in long that was a little damp nothing bad just enough to make the dirt and grim sticky.i probly shouldnt worry about it but im going to keep on eye on it to see if it gets worse over time.my question is,how hard is it to pull that front cover off?thanks
The difficulty depends on your skill level and tools available. You can pull the radiator (so you have more room) water pump, HPOP, LPOP, fuel bowl, then take the bolts out of the motor mounts and raise the motor a couple of inches so you can unbolt the oil pick up tube, then remove the cover. The other method is just to pull the motor out of the truck.
What color anti-freeze do you have? If it's green, when was the last time you checked your SCA levels?
i have the green anti freeze.i checked the sca about 4 months ago and they were a little low,so i added some of the treat ment to the antifreeze, and i just checked it again about 3 weeks ago and it was still good actually a little high. Not to be rude but what does the sca have to do with the front cover?.Its not a bad leak at all just damp in about a 2 in spot, but its not a brand new motor so its gonna have leaks some were..

Your water pump mounts to this cover and he's worried about cavitation eating a hole in the soft aluminum. The tube leads to your EBP sensor mounted on a stamped steel cover, underneath which is your HPOP drive gear. Where is your leak at? at the stamped cover or near the water pump or where?
Not to be rude but what does the sca have to do with the front cover?.
You're not being rude at all. One of the places cavitation can show up is on the thin, cast front cover, so small pinhole leaks or damp spots can be caused by not maintaining your SCA levels.
Sounds like you're on top of the SCA part. I was just curious
if your standing in the front of the truck its on the upper left hand side of the cover.its the one that is bolted to the block with the gray permitex, its oil also or thats what it looked like to me.
well your front cover, is pretty big real estate for a 2 inch leak. I'm just trying to get an idea of where it is on the front cover. There should be the smaller cover holding the actual EBP sensor, behind it is a potential source for oil. Could also be something with your HPOP resevoir mounted to the top of the cover. Most everything on that cover is permatex with a few oring style gaskets. Pics would be handy.
well..if you go down from the very front valve cover bolt were the dip stick tube conects.there are two grooves about 1/8 in deep side by side that run to the cover, that were the damp spot is..i hope this helps..

Its deffenatly nothing to be worried about now but it could get worse over time or it may not.Its just that im anul about my truck and it really jerks my chain when i see something like that.Every motor is going to have an oil leak some were exspecialy when it has 110,000 miles on it.but ill keep an eye on it and ill try to get pics to help point it out to you guys.

Sorry to but in but this is my first diesel and haven't really picked up on your abbreviations yet. Mind telling me what SCA is? Alot of times I have no idea what you are talking about cause always worked on gas motors. Thanks!!
SCA=Supplemental Coolant additive. Diesels vibrate a lot causing cavitation in normal coolant without a special additive. This becomes a problem if the cavitation eats away at the blocks water jackets or the aluminum front cover on the engine that the water pump mounts too. If you use a standard green coolant you need to add SCA to it to prevent irrepairable engine damage. Some Extended Life Coolants don't need it. A good search will answer the details.
Caleb I went back and looked at some pictures of my engine, and couldn't see what you were talking about. But I'm going to go work on it tonight when I get home, I'll see if I can spot it then.
so if u fallow the fuel bowl drain line down, along the front of the block there is a clip that goes around the line and holds it 2 the block, right below that is were the leak is.man its hard describing this to ya.
