Is it worth my time?

found a 1987 F-250 w/ 460-ci auto tranny 4x4 near me. Southern, mostly rust free body. xlt lariat. Hasn't been started in a long while and may have carberator/fuel problems, good to great tires... $700... Is it worth that? Give me some opinions here people!

i would take it and build the 460 for about 800hp and put a solid front axle in it spray some cheap paint on it and call it done

My '88 is a champ and I believe the engine alone is worth the $700. I've got the C6 auto in mine which is also superb. I'm hardly a mechanic and I find the motor very easy to work on. If you think you can get it to start I would say between the motor and the tires it's worth the $700. Plus the Lariat is the premium package of the generation which is nice

A rust free bodied truck of that year would sell for about 3 grand up here, I wouldnt think twice myself for 700 bucks!

Hell you could part it out and easily double your money!

Personally, I wouldn't buy it unless you can hear it run. Then you can get some idea of what kind of shape the motor is actually in...Learned that lesson the hard way.

It is a carb engine. And if it is 4wd then it is worth the 700

If you buy it at 700 you can get that much for it if not more by peddling the parts to guys in the northern climes. The carburated motor may be a little easier to work on, but mechanics who understand carbs are getting fewer these days so you may have to learn to rebuild it on your own. Other than that, see if you can turn the motor by hand or tools with out starting it. If it turns very easily by hand or not at all with any amount of force, you are looking at getting or rebuilding a new motor. It should turn a little tough, but still turn with some effort using a socket wrench on the front bolt in the harmonic balancer. As long as the motor is able to turn over, everything else can be fixed with relatively nickel and dime stuff. Though it may nickel 'n' dime you for a year until it is right again.
