"Stalling at Highway Speeds"

I have one for you all. I had a 71 F-100 that I bought new and drove it until it had 418,000 miles on it. It had a 390 with a C-6 tranny. Anyway, I had this problem, I would be going down the highway at 55-60 mph and the engine would quit. I would coast to the side of the road if I was lucky to have a side of the road to coast to, and let it sit a minute or two, and it would start right back up and run normally. This would only happen once in a while. Sometimes it would go months before it happened again. I changed fuel pumps, fuel lines, carburator and fuel filters. It still did the same thing. It even happened once when I was going through New York City just off the George Washington Bridge. One day I took the sending unit off the gas tank because it seemed to have a spot where the gage would not read. I looked down into the tank with a light to see how much sediment was on the bottom of the tank and there was my problem! There was a disc shaped object about the size of a quarter just drifting around in the gas. I got a piece of brazing rod and sharpened it to a point and snagged that thing! It was a gasket out of the cap from a bottle of gas additive that had at sometime fell into the gas tank and when the tank would get down to around a quarter of a tank the suction tube would pick it up and it would block the suction. After I removed that rascal it never happened again.

WOW!

Next time you have that tank out or the suction line out put a strainer screen on the end of that line!
