Question regarding Throttle Position Sensor

I have a 97 Ranger, 4cyl, that has been giving me a problem with the throttle. Whenever I let off the throttle and depress the clutch the engine continues to race like the throttle is stuck. It seems to be worse when the engine is hot and returns to normal once I have let off of the clutch and put a "load" back on the engine. I have been told that it is probably my TPS. I tried to check it with a DMM, but since I do not own a manual I do not know what the correct readings are, though it did appear to be linear as the throttle was depressed.

Can someone tell me if they have had this problem, what they found, and what are "normal" resistance readings for the TPS?

Thanks for the help.

Question regarding Throttle Position Sensor

One thing to remember, the engine cannot race without air. If you know your throttle isnt sticking open, then air is getting into the plenum somehow. You could have a vacuum leak somewhere like your TBI gasket or vacuum line. The TPS controls fuel mixture, not air mixture, it works like a simulated accelerator pump, tells the computer how far open your throttle is. Another item to check would be your Idle Air Control motor, they can stick open. Sometimes you can take them off and clean them, and they will work again.

Question regarding Throttle Position Sensor

Thanks. No one has ever mentioned the air situation before. All they talk about is the TPS, which I didn't fully understand, since it is a sensor and not a positional device, like say a motor-driven positioner or a valve. However, I took it at face-value since there is the computer to contend with. Not like the old days when there was carb linkage and that was about it.

I will look into it the best I can. I just hate having someone else do it when I can attempt it myself....

First thing to do is find out if the throttle is,
or isn't sticking, if it isn't, then you are
experiencing "throttle hang", which means the IAC
is open to burn the excess fuel from a snap closing
of the throttle/unloading of the engine. By the way,
this is a OBD2 system set up that lowers emissions.

The computer isn't looking for resistance (Ohms) it's
looking for voltage, IIRC it needs to see about 0.94DCV
when the throttle is closed.
