recently replaced rear brakes and rotors on my 05 f150 supercrew, since I did this, they heat up alot, by normal driving. Have only gone uptown a couple times and when I return, they are way too hot to touch. Is this normal till they seat properly or did I miss something?
Many people will say, "The brakes need to wear in" While I agree with that to a point, I do not agree to the heating up, glazing ect...
In another thread, a guy posed the question, do new rotors need turned?
While I said that is a loaded question, everyone said NO!
Your issue, was one of my examples... Heres why.
Rotors, while they are supposed to be true, and built to tollerences, sometimes off. Warped, or to thick...
I have had rotors, an many occassions that were to thick. They needed a little bit taken off.
Here is my take on this... Are you sure, you dont have a faulty caliper? are you sure your slides are lubed properly? In other words, nothing hanging up... parking brake is properly adjusted...
Check, with a micrometer, or dial indicator, the thinkness of your rotor, and find out what the recomened tolerances are...
1 more thing, if you jack the tire up. You should spin it, and get atleast 1 full rotation, after you let go of the tire. ( spin it like the wheel of fortune) LOL
Mustang6147 hit on a specific issue I had just two weeks ago after changing my rotors and pads, checking the parking brake adjustment. I learned this after the fact. You need to adjust the pads to have .020" clearance to the ID of the new rotors. The first sign was that the rotors did not slide on as easily as they should have, especially on one side. Then on a short run down the road a vibration developed. Then I took the wheels off and noticed the lug nots were extremely hot on the one side. I reserahced it, but it was a few days before I could address it. During a 1 hour highway trip on the return leg that tire went flat and trashed. I am convinced that was the result of the heat build up. When making the adjustment I found a lot of brake dust (for just a few days of driving) and damage parking brake pads. Made the adjustments and all seems okay now. adjust those brakes!
