my OD button on the shift lever is flashing on and off, also my speedometer stop working, the tachometer and other gauges all work, i was told that my neutral safety switch is out and my speed sensor, i replaced my speed sensor and still having the problem, i am going to purchase my neutral safety switch, is there anything special on changing out the neutral safety switch that i should be aware of?
I would not change out the neutral safety switch until after you get the speedometer working as there may not be anything wrong with it.
I do not know why someone told you to change it out anyway (the neutral safety switch).
I bet your ABS light on the dash is on also.
What year truck is it?
If you replaced the VSS on the rear end then check all the wiring from the sensor to the dash.
If OK unhook the ABS module and see if the problem goes away.
Check the voltage from the rear end. Does the voltage increase smoothly and continuously from 0 to approximately 3.5 volts as vehicle speed increases from 0 to 30 mph.
You can use a volt-meter (on "AC" mode) and run the car (you can do it on jackstands or by driving it).
If the voltage is OK then you may have a bad PSOM.
Programmable Speedometer/Odometer Module (PSOM): A module that processes vehicle speed information for use in various electronic systems. The PSOM can be programmed to accommodate various tire and axle combinations.
The PSOM gives the speed information to the PCM Computer so the Computer can operate the transmission.
It also drives the speedometer and odometer and gives information to the Speed Control System.
Neutral safety switch? Does the truck start when you put it in park and neutral? doesn't when in drive or reverse? Then the neutral safety switch is fine.
What subford said, the PSOM is the likely suspect.
If you don't have a tach and would like one get a instrument cluster that has one in it from the bone yard and replace it as a unit. Its plug and play, the wiring for it is already there.
But take a minute and do the test suggested to make sure that is the problem.
The truck starts, the gas, oil, water, battery, and tachometer gauges all work, no flashing abs light, also i noticed my power locks dont unlock but they lock and when i do press the button the illumination comes on the cluster and my marker lights come when i hold the button down on the door. Would these two issues go hand in hand, a bad light switch and PSOM?
Jumping ahead here a tad but I think you got a bad ground, low and behind the left cowl panel.
Depends a little on the answers to my last post but I think that's the problem. When you hit the door lock it makes it connect, just not good enough? Anyway if it where me it be worth a look see before doing anything else.
low and behind the left cowl panel under the dash or in the engine bay? and the transfer case i have is a push button electronic type shift.
Sorry no one calls it that, should had said "kick panel", you're looking for a ground screw with a black wire or wires on it.
There is one on the other side to, check them both. One side shows a black-white wire, other side a black wire.
Make sure they are both clean and tight.
I'd think the one on the drivers side? but the source I got here isn't the best to go by!
Anyway one of them is the PCM ground for the PSOM, instrument lights and door locks. The locks are what I think is called (and looks like) reverse polarity unlock type. Bad ground there would explain a lot of your issues.
Check your main body ground . There is a smaller black wire coming off the ground side (NEG [-]) post of the battery and going to body. Make sure this ground is good. Image below.
Make sure the large black wire coming off the ground side (NEG [-]) post of the battery and going to the engine block is good. This cable (wire) may have a lug half way to the engine block at the frame but this frame ground is not needed unless you are pulling a trailer. If this ground cable is not grounded good to the engine block you can burn up the smaller black wire to the body.
Great pic's subford, I should have included checking the main body ground near the battery. Even though sounds like a isolated problem, that one is still suspect.
