Carb adjustments

Hey guys. I have a Holley 4160 4bbl wit helec. choke and I believe vac 2nds. When changing plugs, I notice black on the white part just above electrode. It's not oil so I assume the truck is running little bit rich. These are new plugs that I just pulled after two weeks to do some other work. My bud said that the screws (one on each side, forgot their name, on the bowl) should be around 1 1/2 turn out after being screwed all the way in. Mine were around 2 1/4 turns. I havn't a Holley manuel yet, and rather inexperienced. What should I check for richness other than the plugs being dirty? Is this setting for those screws (mixture?) about right? I'm clueless, just one more little thing to cross off my list. Thank you, Blair T

Blair,

The way I do it is, start with the idle mixture screws at 1 1/2 turns from bottom as you decribed. With the engine warm and idling, slowly adjust the screws for the highest RPM/smoothest idle. If using a vac gauge look for the highest vac. Try and keep both screws as close to equal as possible. After these are set adjust the idle screw on the linkage for the correct idle RPM. Hope this helps.

i set mine like lee described in his post. if you are limited on tools and are beginning to build a nice set of tools. lee mentioned a vacuum gauge. they are inexpensive and can be picked up most anywhere. the vacuum gauge is really helpful.

I would recommend one additional step to Lee's guidance: after you adjust the idle, check/adjust mixture screws one more time (should not require much change).
