Timing Chain

Well as some of you know my truck was having a problem related to starting. it was getting fuel and its getting spark however its not starting. after loosing the distributor and turning it from left to right and right to left stoping at several intervals to attempt to start there was neither a attempted start nor did it seem to improve the symptoms which is leading me to believe the Timing chain is the culprit. There was talk back when the water pump went out before i bought it of replacing the timing chain however the mechainic that fixed it said because it was a double roller that it didnt need to be replaced. Several people have came by and looked at it and all have said Timing chain needs to be replaced. can any of you deliever any thoughts on this or second opinons?

Turn the motor by hand to TDC on the comp stroke , then remove dist cap & see if the rotor is pointing at # 1 , it should be close . To check slack in the chain turn the motor by hand clock wise , then turn it back the other way & see how far you have to move it to get the rotor to turn the other way . Also can be distributor gear problem... Lew

Update

Truck's Timing was way off. My Mechanic come over and got it to running. However he says the EGR needs to be replaced because its doesnt want to idle but going down the road it does good. i am tickled to death to have it running
