starting problems!!
I just had a bunch of starter issues myself, but let me clarify your symptoms, and please correct any that aren't accurate:
Power to all accessories (lights, radio, etc.) is fine
Truck starts 90% of the time with no problem.
New batteries, alternator, GPR, and starter. (What brand and store did you get these from?)
Fuel filter, fuel lines, and air filter are fine.
So when the truck will not start, the only thing that happens is a "CLICK" from the general area of the starter, correct? Repeated tries will eventually get the engine to crank and then fire.
Questions:
1. When the truck cranks over, does it ever fail to start?
2. Have you ever had the opportunity to have someone get under the truck and try to locate the source of the "CLICK" when it does fail to crank?
My vote would be for a failing starter solenoid, which as was already pointed out, is integral on the starter itself, not on the fender well. I eventually went with an OEM Mitsubishi starter for my 1999 7.3 and have had zero issues with it since. My source was Nations Starter & Alternator (WEBSITE) and paid $175 shipped for a 100% brand new starter. Your 2002 will be slightly different but check their site and/or call them.
It would be a very good idea to check your battery cables for current & resistance. Corrosion happens internally sometimes, so you never see it, but the cables turn out to be junked.
You're not too far from J&B Auto Crush either. You might try there for a wrecked 7.3 for a starter or battery cables. They're at 4980 Brighton Blvd. Ask for Mike, he's incredibly helpful and a great guy.
