New truck
The truck is in running condition. a few dents, a couple rust holes in the back of the bed, and the front end needs some work, but otherwise it runs fairly well and most everything works.
The first 2 things I want to do are rust proof the frame and underbody. Here in WA most of the year it's wet and cold, and I want to protect my frame and body as best that I can, so my idea was to clean up the frame as well as possible then spay it with a rust preventing primer. Is this something that is commonly done, or is there another way to protect my frame (besides not driving the truck
)? Is regular old rustoleom primer in the rattle can good enough for the job or should I use something else?
Rattle can primer is not chip resistant, nor is it nearly heavy enough to give any more than a very very thin layer of temporary protection. Plus, if you are going to go to the trouble of cleaning the frame first (as you should do), you might as well use something that is going to last a long time. You'll be under your truck with rattle cans several times per year if you choose to go that route. Spend the money, get the good stuff, take your time, and do it once.
Congrats on the find, and be sure to give us pics of your progress!
