Air filters: I always buy a cheaper one which usually runs me about $7 at the Wal-Mart. But right next to those sit the K&N filters which are nearly $50! So, what's the difference? They look the same to me.
People have been arguing on this topic back and forth for too long to care anymore. The K&N can be cleaned and used again and again. However, after its cleaned you must place a light oil coating on it to capture some of the dirt in the air before it enters the combustion chamber of your vehicle. There have been instances where the oil would come off of the filter and foul out the MAF sensor on a fuel injected vehicle. And again, some will state that too much oil is being placed on the filter. I myself have had this happen with a '90 Crown Vic that I used to have. Once I figured it out thats what was causing my car to run rough, I removed the K&N and kept using paper filters.
The K&N's are supposed to flow alot more air, but can the engine handle that much more air? My truck and car runs perfectly fine with a clean paper filter that gets changed when its dirty. But my ATV has a K&N and I do have to clean it pretty regularly, but that's anything BUT a street envirionment where it gets used.
Some people swear by them, some people swear against 'em. Your choice.
