i replaced the ect on my 88 with a 302.it fixed my idle problem, sorta.when the motor is cold it cranks good and idles down when it is suposed to but as soon as i hit the gas the moter races real high.then i turn off the truck then crank it back up again the it idles perfect.i believe on a previos post i was told it was the fpr adjusting to the vacumm.if so do i need to replace the fpr or do something else?
I do not see how a FPR would cause your problem.
Sounds like too much air is getting into the intake.
Check the throttle and make sure it and the cables to it are free and it snaps shut each time.
1) Check for vacuum leaks.
2) Begin testing the ignition system components- if you can shut the truck off, turn it back on and it straightens out, that sounds electrical to me.
If necessary you can always pull codes- see www.fordfuelinjection.com for the how-to info. [Note- if you have a computer- I didn't notice you had an 88 when I first read the post.]
