Just Getting Started

Just bought this 68 a while ago. It's in exceptional condition, body is solid and motor runs great, but uses oil (covered that in another thread). It will be a daily driver. I plan to put it all back pretty much original, but would like a little more spirit under the hood. The 360 is a wee bit sluggish on take off.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

Imp getting ready to do a tune up, ordered the Pertronix Ignition and a 40k coil to replace the points and condenser. Imp going to do new wires and plugs and all. 1) any do's and don'ts? 2) recommendations? (i.e. brands to avoid, etc.)<o></o>

Also, the Q&A says the first and best bang for the buck is headers and duels. Same questions: 1) any do's and don'ts? 2) recommendations? (i.e. brands to avoid, mufflers, etc.) I want more of the mustang rumble sound, not to loud.

I'm looking to make some of these external improvements BEFORE rebuilding, so I will better know what needs to be done when that time comes... make sense?

Input is greatly appreciated.

I usually just put whatever Azone has for wires and Motorcraft or Autolite plugs. I'd stay away from any of the gimic plugs as I don't think they warrant the price for what you are putting them in. My opinion only.

Headers/exhaust is a good thing. Those old log manifolds are not the best and likely yours are leaking now? They crack and then they are useless. I put a Summit Racing $200 dual kit on my truck and it lasted for the 5 yrs I ran it. They were Dynomax headers and turbo mufflers with universal tailpipes in front of rear wheels. Just a nice note, nothing loud(not that that is bad). Getting the old manifolds off will be the trick as the upper bolts are very prone to breakage and that will keep you down for as long as it takes to get the broke bolts out. Spending a week+ or so dosing the upper bolts with Liquid Wrench will definitely help get them out. The back side of the holes are open and will rust the bolt solid many years before you got it. Heat and a very delicate use of a wrench goes a long way.
