So I have the oppertunity to pick up another 85 f350 SRW 6.9, but before I do I want to make sure I am thinking straight...
when starting cold the guy is using starting fluid to get it going, warm start it turns over no problem, and either way there is no wait to start lamp.
His claim is bad GPC, and he has the $500 dealer estimate he showed me basically backing this statement up...I am I correct in thinking that if I check out/bypass the harness, install a new GPC an GP's I should be good to go?
Consider the 7.3 solid state system changeover, below is the info on a post I saved.
Controller kit......IH
On my 1984 F250, I installed a solid state glow plug controller retrofit kit ( part No. 1809443C96, cost was $ 271 at International Harvester dealer) in January 1995.
The kit came with new everything needed such as, wiring harness, glow plugs, detailed instructions etc.
It has worked flawless, I have lost only one glowplug in 13 years of use.
cool....the guy is giving it to me for $300, body is decent, and other than the cold start issue runs like a top with strong pull.
In as much as at heart I am a GM guy (cars) I have always known Ford built great trucks...the difference between the two when it comes to 25 year old beasts is night and day and my wife thinks I have started a new addiction (so far we are at 2 trucks in 1 month)
You might want to consider getting some new glow plugs while your at it. Using the either might have killed the GP's and right now their on sale at O'Reilly's web site for $5.60 each plus shipping.
