I went to the local Exxon station tonight (I'm in PA) and started to fill up on diesel. After a while, about 25 gallons, I realized the pump said Low Sulpher Diesel not ULSD.
When I got home I called the station to verify if it was really LSD, but got some clerk who didn't know anything. He said to call the manager tomorrow.
What are the chances that it really had Low Sulpher Diesel, and if so, what damage can it cause to a 2008 F450? Thanks.
I accidentally put 12 gallons of LSD in my 08 6.4 a couple of weeks ago.Nothing happened. It ran fine..No extra regens, no black tail pipes.Could not tell the difference. ran a 100 miles or so then topped off with ULSD.
Whether or not it was the right fuel will be hard to figure out if you run into the same experience that I have at various stations.
Like richfaa says, it should not be a big deal but I would try to burn it up as fast as possible.
I have had to burn the LSD a handful of times. The worst was on I-40 going East from Knoxville, TN. My tank was low, there are very few stops through the mountains there between Knoxville and Asheville, NC and I was towing a trailer. There is a Pilot trucks stop there, only had LSD, and I had to get enough fuel to go 100 miles or so.
Usually, I burn it up within a few hours and get the right stuff in there. If you do lots of stop and go and idle you may want to get as much ULSD in there as you can.
I had that happen to me on my recent trip up north. I only put about 5 gals in there to get me to a truck stop that had the correct stuff. I suffer no ill effects.
Problemw you would run into is the emissions stuff. It is not designed for the increase in sulfur content. DPF will fill up quicker and I don't think the EGR will like it either.
So what can you do? Here is what I have done. I reprogrammed my Tom Tom to show and warn me of every truck stop along the route I am driving. Then I can decide based upon my fuel level whether I should pull over or not.
It's possible if you continue to use LSD that the injectors could get damaged. We believe a guy on another board has that happening right now. Haven't confirmed it yet, but the signs are kinda pointing that way.
It would be nice if there was some sort of additive that we could pour in in the event we do come across that problem and don't realize it after pumping 20+ gallons in.
Those of us with the older PSD'S would love to find some LSD fuel. Most of us can't find it. It is likely that someone didn't replace the sticker on the pump.

I called the manager of the station today and he confirmed that it is Low Sulpher Diesel. Talked to the diesel tech at Ford and he said to run it through - it may go into regen more often - then fill up with ULSD.
I would let it burn down to 1/2 tank and fill up again. then do that again at another 1/2 tank myself. try to water it down. Issue is clogging up the egr. You don't want that and that won't be a warranty repair.
I am next to positive that the original owners guides for the 6.4 diesel stated that an occassional tank of LSD would not hurt anything but would cause more frequent regenerations. For whatever reason it seems they removed that wording on the later editions.
Also note that ULSD can be as much as 15ppm sulfer and fuel that has as little as 15.1 ppm sulfer would have to be to labeled LSD.
