Dingy Fender Wells

My fender wells, front and back, are dingy and gross. What's the best practice for getting them grime free and looking black again?

I wouldnt undercoat them... Undercoating is always a pain, especially after a few months, plus it is hard to take parts off with undercoating overspray on them.

I would wash the wheel wells with a detergent, Westly's bleach white works good, Then once they are dry, you can hit any rust spots with a product called rust converter. Thst kills the rust, especuially on the back of body panels. The Use the rustoleum silver can, (Proffesional) paint them black, I wouldnt recomend gloss, but use satin, or semi gloss. Hit any spots you cant reach wioth a brush, with the same paint in a spray can.

That is the method I use, and I only touch up the visible spots as needed with a spray can. The frame and body parts hold up for years, but the spings tend to wear and show rust more often. People might reccomend por50. I dont want to get that involved though...

i do my explorer with gloss black krylon once a year. its a 96 and it still looks like new under it.

i just pressure washed the excursions wheel wells/underside and plan on doing the same. i like the gloss because the water/dirt seems to just run off much easier then satin/flat.

Every time I wash my Ex, I use Simple Green and a long handled brush for a quick cleaning of the wheelhouses.. Thanks to this...they have never gotten that bad.

I do sometimes touch-up the rear wheel houses with spray undercoat. Flat black or semi-flat (Krylon) also may work.

For the front....after washing, I use Sprayway non-silicone dressing on all the plastic liners. (I do this for every car I detail and every time I wash my own).

I also use this on front wheel wheel plastic liners too. Or on plastic gas tank covers, suspension pieces, etc. I guess you could use any sort of tire dressing..but I will not use silicone products so I stick with the Sprayway product

Anyhow...it makes everything look nice and fresh, keeps junk from sticking next time, and in my opinion is the perfect finishing touch.

I've never heard of Sprayway, but sounds like a good product. Where do find it? Thanks.

I use a spray on cleaner, (Any kind) and then pressure wash. After that I use amour-all and they look just as new again.

I don’t use, or at least avoid as much as possible the use of silicone products in car detailing.

The use of silicone in car care products is hotly debated with many companies defending their use of silicones.

Since we’re only speaking about “Dressings” in this thread, I’ll keep my points on topic.

There are very few dressings that are silicone free. The aforementioned Sprayway is one, Zaino’s Tire Dressing is another, and 303 Aerospace Protectant is another. I also understand that the current Armor-All white bottle protectant is also water based and does not contain silicones.

There’s lots of good info here, http://www.303products.com/shop303/i...ategory_id=198.
