I was in the junk yard today and found a 81 F150 with a 300 6 cylinder and a 4 speed transmission. I currently have a 80 F100 with a 351w and 3spd 3.03. I want to know if the 4 speed will fit my bell housing and if this is a good idea. I couldn't get any ID numbers off of the tranny because it was covered in grease. I can say the shifter was mounted closer to the driver and off center to the left and had linkages. I have seen other 4 speeds where the shifter was in the center almost under the dash and didn't use a linkage. Anyone have any input on what tranny I found and if it could work?
I have no idea what tranny you found; the Borg Warner T18 is what's commonly referred to
as a "top loader" and there are no shifter linkages, the gear shift is inserted directly into the
top of the transmission. I think it's the New Process NP208 that's the other common
4-speed during that time but I don't know much about it, I'd have to look in the book. You
say you found a 4-speed with a shifter linkage, dunno what that is....
Regardless, I think all transmissions share the same orientation of the attaching bolts &
spline counts, allowing any tranny to mate up to any bell housing. It'd sure be nice if the
bell-housing-to-engine oreintations were all the same....
It will pretty much directly swap for your 3.03. However it isn't a particularly great transmission. I've had 2 of them, and both of them ended up in the scrap heap.... LOL
