some problems solved. some not....

howdy to all!

Ouh, last week my '01 ranger lost power and started mossfiring. I changed coils, wires and spark plugs. No change. Well, I tried to change oxy sensors and by mistake started engine w/o one oxy sensor and realised, that I have clogged cat!

Today I pulled out cat.converter and nocked out all from it (all was bad, really bad) and started engine w/o converter. Engine revs up well, but I still have missfire. When I press gas smoothly, no missfire, when I try to accelerate agressively, I have missfire but then missfire dissapeares and truck acccelerates well. I changed injectors, no change again. Ok. Your suggestions gentelmen! Any tips please!

Well maybe scan the computer for trouble codes & post All the code Numbers found.

It seems from what you say, that the compuer isn't responding to quick throttle changes to properly adjust fuel trim.

The computer needs good PID inputs from the MAF, O2 & TPS sensors to properly tell the fuel injectors how long to squirt fuel, to keep fuel trim within specification as engine load increases.

So maybe begin by checking the air filter to see if it's dirty & properly cleaning the MAF sensor with a nonresidual plastic safe cleaner.

Then check the TPS to make sure it's performing right with a smooth change in resistance as you slowly go from closed to wide open the throttle, then maybe check to make sure it has the 5 volt reference at it's electrical connector at KOEO.

Then maybe check the O2 sensors output to the computer, to make sure they are withn range & switching speed is fast.

Then maybe check fuel pressure.

Any idea why the cat converter was bad???? Have you been having fuel trim problems????

well, now I know why. I had two injectors leaking. That's why 2 spark plugs went out and that's why cat converter went bad.

So I have to change 2 injectors, spark plugs and removed converter and when I dii all, truck runs well. I had P0302 and P0301 codes stored. but CEL was ao when I used to drive for many miles, else I had no codes.

Now runs well, but with rear cat converter only. Today it is Independence Day here and I will drive to do emisson test in twusday only. But by smell I feel that to have one cat is nought to pass test if engine is warmed up well (LOL).

LOL! well, it is like a chain reaction - bad injector -> bad spar plug -> bad cat -> no perfomance/missfire/poor fuel milage.....

Well, we all here do not like EGR, cat converters (especially SCR), and all these emission things. seems to me this is way to nowere. easier to use lectrically powered trucks....

But.... ouh, seems to me when we will start using electrically driven vehicles Greens will not stop. they will say old big batteries are harmfull and dangerouse, electro magnetic fields kill fish somwere in Indian Ocean and mosqits in Africa, Some dumb ____s will short battery drilling holes for bigger subwoofer and he will say that it is dangerouse car and try to get something throught cort.... LOL!

Yup we have the same kind of "Green" folks & ambulance chasing Lawyers here too!!!!

Good to hear you have the Ranger mostly put right now.

Emissions systems properly designed, with good computer programing & properly maintained, can make the engine operate more efficiently, still make good power & have lower emissions, all with good mpg.

So computers, programming & emission control systems have come a long long way in the last 20, or so years & don't really take away from the engines performance like they did back in the mid 70's, when they first began to be installed on vehicles.

But a person nearly needs to be a danged scientist to work on one now!!!! lol

seems to me we are near the revolution. many of us will start driving electrically powered cars.... may be they will offer conversion kits for old trucks )) LOL
