Question 2 percent Biodiesel A Problem?

Oregon passed a law requiring all diesel to have 2% biodiesel added. The suppliers have converted over already, even though it isn't required until the first of next year.

I suspect that this is a small enough amount to simply be added lubricant rather than a problem-causing contamination of the fuel system, but want input from you guys.

I can't see this as a negative, in fact, I'd see the positive side of the added lubricity.

I ran some b10 last month and the truck loved it.

As far as contaminants, I think at such a small percentage you shouldn't have to worry about that. Just run anti-gel in the winter and you'll be ok. Heck around here, they can't even keep their #2 diesel from getting contaminated with water

X2, your truck will actually like it. I run B20 quite a bit and the truck quiter and smoother with it. If the state mandated B50 or something that wouldn't be cool, but B2 is no problem. In fact, I am pretty sure in PDX everything is B5 now.

If your concern is about the bio cleaning out deposits in your fuel tank and plugging your filter, B2-B5 shouldn't be significant enough to do that. B20 is where you need to be careful with checking your filter after a few tankfuls at that blend. Just keep a spare on hand in case it happens.

As everyone else stated, the lubricity gain even at B2, will be tremendous, with no power or mileage drop.

7.3's love bio and it keeps them clean from tank to injectors.

I have been running b-5 for about thre months and the truck seems to love it. No problems what so ever. Quieter also. Although I do seem to get more black smoke when I romp on it. Not always a bad thing, dang tailgaiters.

It'll be fine. 2% is nothing.

It's the best thing you can do for your fuel system internals.

Actually, it is up to B5 now and will go up to B20 by 2015.

Your truck will be fine I am having b20 delivered to my highway diesel tanks for the summer. The thing everyone should be frustrated with is our crooked politicians and the way they mandate changes based on poor science.

Wink

So our 7.3s don't like B-99? I haven't used it yet but its available here right now from a local home-town fuel suplier-have to buy it in 55 gallon drums because they say they have no way to put it into my truck's tank.....I HAVE run 2 tanks of B-20 and my engine seemed quieter and smoother.......

Not sure where you gathered that, but I run my own brew of B100 from around May-October. I keep a sample jar of each batch I make outside so when temps drop I know roughly how much #2 pump I need to blend with it. Last winter when it dropped into the lower teens here I ran anywhere from a B40-B50.

You will just need to keep an eye out for your filter plugging up because even at B20, if you have any deposits in your tank from dino, they'll make their way onto the fuel filter. Could take several tanks or more, or as in my case, won't happen at all. It just depends on the condition of the inside of your fuel tank to begin with.

Your truck will run great on B99. You'll see a 5%-10% drop in mpg, and close to a corresponding drop in power. These things are not an issue for me though since I make my own, currently at around $.72/gallon raw cost.

Ditto (with binuya). I run B100 homebrew from April through October, and use various blends in winter, based mostly on outside temp. I've brewed and used almost 2000 gallons in the last three years and have had no problems. The 7.3 seems to crave the B100!
