I always bypass the seperator on my trucks, that thing doesn't work right, at least put a plug in the line that come down from it to the ground, you can replace it with a standard fuel filter/separator or bypass it and put a housing off a 7.3 on the truck.

The stock water seperator on the 86 and earlier trucks is famous for air intrusion.
Some people get by with a bolt in the drain line.
On mine, it was also leaking air in by the drain pull valve shaft, upgrading to a 7.3 style seperator/filter and completely bypassing the stock unit was my fix.
