You should start with a restraining order.

Anthony, file a police report. Its easy, and has no repercussions. Plus you might get your insurance to cover it. But I guarantee you, if they even consider covering it, the first thing they will ask is "Do you have a police report?"

Doesn't Bill have a FICM? or was it mourning a FICM?

A nice pic from the return trip to Camarillo. I alway have the FD do my engine repairs on the 101.

Amazingly, it was, and still is, running fine. My rebuilt should be here on Wednesday.

Wonder if it was low voltage @ cranking that took out the resistor, or if just kinda happens over time...I guess there's really no way to tell.

BTW I went ahead and swapped out my (truck's ) batteries yesterday. No more dropping into the 9's on start up.

Were you amazed at how much faster it was spinning the crank? I know I was. That slow cranking creeps up on ya, and you just don't notice.

Can't say if that caused the burnt resistor, or not, but it is a good theory. On the other hand, a loose solder connection will cause its own heat.

The truck is showing exactly the same voltages this morning, with that resistor completely removed. So it was probably an open circuit for some time.

I did notice that it cranked a little faster. Now I'm wondering if I might ought to hook up AE and check my FICM voltage on start.

If you do, do it on a cold morning start. That is the only time I saw low volts.

Odd how it acts. This morning I turned the key on and waited while my Insight booted up before cranking. That takes about 30 secs. I had 48 volts during the WTS period, and 48 volts while it was cranking, and as soon as it fired the volts dropped down to 42. Five minutes later it had crept back up to 48. Then it will stay there all day.

With what brand did you replace them?

I need to do a little reading apparently ... what voltage are we looking for on those? A good friend has a 6.0 with a miss at idle...

My 7.3 seems to be running well, but it smokes just a tiny bit most of the time now as the 38R is spinning up, even with the dp in 'detuned' mode. (The least smoke is in towing mode...) It especially smokes if you stomp on it... the boot blew off 6 or 7 times in the last 3k miles... and the engine seems to have burnt off more than a quart in that time. (Time to change the oil anyway....)

I will admit... during one big pull up a mtn in West TX, I was having fun getting into it before I realised that my EGT's had spiked off the gauge... I immediately eased off and let them drop back to an acceptable temp... but was wondering how bad I might have cooked something... or if a few seconds is likely ok... (I'm normally **** retentive about watching that...)

Wondering if the ccv could have burped that much oil into the intercooler when the boot kept blowing off.... or if a dirty intercooler is likely the cause of the boot popping off every time I touch 28 psi...

I know I should pull the IC and check it out... but the unreasonable part of me doesn't want to even look at it until I can afford to just swap in a 6.0 or custom built IC.

Yeah, 48 is the spec, and they get real serious about it. Anything less than 45-46, and supposedly something is wrong.

As I understand it, the power supply portion of the FICM has 4 redundant voltage amplifiers. And looking at my circuit boards, I would say that is exactly what it looked like. Four quadrants with identical components. If one quadrant fails, which is what I have, the other 3 will still boost to 48 volts at all but the highest current draw times. When the input voltage is low, as with bad batteries, the power supplies also have to work harder to maintain 48.

When the engine is cold, they hammer the injectors with a long pulse width on the close coils to make them work with cold oil. At that point the 3 working quadrants cannot maintain the full 48 volts. Here we get into some supposition on my part, and controversy, on exactly why.

I finally had a buddy come to the shop this weekend & help get this boat of a hood aligned somewhat so I can start the hood pin mounts on it. Then I welded on the hood pin mounts a bit.

I'll do more in a month or 3 when I'm done playing with the alfa...
