How many has a 5.4 V8

Another V10 versus.... thread!
Stewart
no, no, no...atleast not my intention anyhow.
what i was trying to say is i've driven a 5.4 super duty crew cab and it left ALOT to be desired in the power department. i drive my v10 excursion every day and i know it moves quicker then that. so the extra weight of the excursion with the 5.4 would be unbearable..thats my take on it and i kinda leave that with a open ended question..is it?
just going by the numbers it would seem it would be a ways behind.
I have a 2000 5.4, (got it in 03, used) I would have preferred the V10.... I tow a 3Klb boat and it definitely struggles. Funny thing is, I do not see much of a mpg degrade while towing.
I am interested in the modifications that were mentioned earlier. What are some of the lesser expensive mods I can do to increase performance? btw...I am replacing my rear diff cover with the 08, aluminum cover today, not a performance mod, but its just a cool upgrade.

When I was looking at an Excursion back in 2000 and 2001, I saw a handful of 5.4, 4x4, Limited trucks. When I saw the horsepower ratings for it, I said hell no and promptly looked closer at the V10 and the Powerstroke. I ended up with the Powerstroke because I liked the idea of having a diesel engine in an SUV; it was very unique and I liked it.
The 5.4 is easier to mod and get more power out of, but the best thing you can do for it especially if you tow and need more power is to regear to 4.10. It'll cost you a pretty penny, but it'll tow better and do a better job of getting out of it's own way.

Here are some spec's from a 2001 Excursion:
Horsepower Torque
5.4 Engine 255 H.P. 350 Ft.Lbs. @ 2500 RPM
6.8 Engine 310 H.P. 425 Ft.Lbs @ 3250 RPM
7.3 Diesel 250 H.P. 505 Ft.Lbs. @ 1600 RPM
There's really no way to compare Excursions with different engines to one another if they are bone stock. This is one of the many reasons why they are so unique.
Now before this thread gets off base lets hear some imput on mods offered for the 5.4.
I have a V-10 4X4 Limited that is bone stock, it's just too good of a truck to mess with.
I am thinking about purchasing a 5.4 Excursion 4x4 a little later and playing around with it. I have an idea that a 5.4 can be made to come alive with a few modes.
I am also wondering if a 5.4 can be pulled out of an Excursion without lifting the body and etc.

What's your nephew's name? Does he post on the Lightning boards?

5.4 v8
I have a '04 4x4 with a 5.4 V8.
I purchased it very cheap when the gas prices were sky high with 60,000 miles.
I pull our 26' toyhauler with it just fine, granted there are not a lot of hills where we go. Obviously a V10 or Diesel would pull better, but I am happy with the 5.4.
My dad has a V10, we get almost the same mileage (around 13), so you aren't going to save any gas with the V8.

I am currently driving a 2wd 5.4L EX with 237,000 miles on the clock. It is a slug, but then again it is plumb worn out, it misses alot, bucks at 1500-1800 RPM, suspension is shot, wandering and wobbly... overall it's horrible to drive. All that aside it can still pull out in traffic and merge on the highway with relative ease, and I can leave a traffic light pretty quick if needed. I'm thinking it might have the 4.10 gears, but I'm not sure.
So... I do see the potential in it. With a fresh(er) Lightning engine in it and the mods listed above, suspension tightened up I think it would be a sweet daily driver/occasional tow vehicle.
Maybe when I get my diesel 4x4 EX all done I will take whats left of this 2wd and build it up (slowly.... very slowly). Look for a write-up sometime next decade!
I have a 00 5.4 278,000 and have yet to understand why the negativity (often whining) is over towing? I have hauled a six horse stock fully with loaded horses, water tank, camping supplies hay grain etc and kicked royal *** on the freeway. I have driven him hard since I bought him new april 14 00 and while problems many towing was NEVER one of them. Mileage always rocked, He is showing his age but this guy has been to hell and back. (yes my truck is a he cause to call him a she would sound kinda gay) Horsepower? I don't race on Saturday nights and I never been left behind at a light. I have pulled my trailers through the mountains of tennesse, eastern NC, the deserts of arizona and new mexico, hauled my dads 59 back on my car hauler from san diego, towed the bayliner.. He is a frikken beast. I dont understand the conversations about towing issues and I have done no mods.
I am trying now to trade him for a motorcycle because I have another tow vehicle (92 chevy 1500) and I want a bike. But he has been one hell of a tow vehicle.

The easiest thing to do would be to add a small single turbo (maybe a remote mount) to the stock 5.4 along with some supporting mods such as fuel injectors, MAF meter and a conservative tune. 6 pounds of boost would really wake the truck up.
Plus, without the parasitic drag of a supercharger you can run less boost and make more power while using less fuel utilizing a proper turbo.
