Need your help and suggestions.
Engine light came on last week at approx. 43,000 miles. Error code ( via Autozone) revealed DTC P0308 (number 8 cyl. misfire). Engine periodically runs rough, but generally OK-However MPG is less. Autozone suggested I replace coil pack (Est. $60), but I decided to investigate my records for similar problems.
My records indicated similar problem at 22,800 miles. Under warranty, Ford replaced No. 1 and 4 cyl. coil pack, spark plug and fuel injectors.
Visited with Ford service writer this AM, and he wants $80 to perform a computer check and then stated that " these new platium sparks plugs are easily damaged by dirt and water in the fuel". Based on this statement it appears that my Ford dealer will replace the spark plug, coil pack and fuel injector of No. 8 cyl. to solve this problem (at least$200 in parts plus labor $???).
I didn't leave the Exp. for service and decided to investigate for similar situations via this forum.
Ford's sales lit. stated that spark plugs should last for 100,000 miles and I've never had to replaced a coil or
fuel injectors on cars (either Ford or GM)under 125,000 miles.
I would appreciate your comments and recommendations.
Thanks,
Hmm..those are all valid solutions. What I would do is go ahead and replace the coil pack - they seem to be prone to problems (I've been down the same road before). That would be a relatively inexpensive fix. Otherwise, it might be a Ford job - I'm not sure which cylinder is #8, but if it happens to be one that's REALLY out of the way (passenger side, aft) then it would be worth it to pay someone else. Nobody needs that kind of aggravation.
