My buddy picked up a 76 shorty 4x4 with a 429 today. Yahoo for him. Now, he knows I come here alot, so I am looking for tips on cleaning the tank out. It was half full for almost 5 years. We want to clean the fuel system before any major run time. When I did mine on my 78', I just used hot water and kept filling and draining it while beating the outside. Probably not the best way, but it worked for me, I didn't have lots of rust. His doesn't appear shot, just a little more rusty than we first thought. Is there a good home remedy to clean your tank? I used the search function, but all my tries kept coming up with "too common a term", or something. The only radiator shop with a good rep is an hour away and we wanted to fool with his new toy tomorrow and Friday. Any ideas would be great, thanks, Blair
Buy a new O-ring for the sending unit, then siphon all the gas out, drop the tank, pull the sender, & dump the rest of the gas out. Put a 75W drop-light under the tank to keep it warm & put a vacuum hose in the sender hole hooked to the blower side of the vacuum cleaner & let it run for a couple of hours to clear ALL the gas vapor from the tank. That makes it safe to do whatever you need to.
You can buy kits of acid & coating at motorcycle shops or from restoration suppliers like Eastwood.
Well his tank is off, but everyone is closed for the holiday, so we can't pick up any acid kits until tomorrow. Question for me now, been working on my truck since August, the gas in it is probalby stale now right? Could use some stabil and top her off with fresh gas and be O.K.? The gas in it was put in the tank in August. Thanks, BLair
