1999 F250 Super Duty -4x4 -5.4L w/air 76000 miles on truck.
Tuesday driving truck battery light comes on and noticed on ac and slow wipers.
Go home park truck turn off engine ,try to restart dead (alternator).
Wensday morning remove alternator install excel alternator ,wrong alternator ,it was for F250 but not super duty.
OK no problem just change it for the right one ,install another excel still not getting any charge from alternator . reading on battery do not go over 11.95 engine off 11.78 idle 11.46 idle & air on . This I would say is a bad alt (yes?) . have mechanic check it, says bad alt (11.60)
Thursday 3rd alt --napa alt install still same problem .
This is on a new napa battery as of wensday , unhooked battery before removing alt . checked bat cables to make sure all clean.
napa store said they tested three and tested bad.
mechanic said he has seen the same thing need to get dealer rebuilt.
Am i not doing something right or missing somthing ?
If posible can someone please tell me where the three wires go to on the three wire clip .
Thank you very much
I only did this job because alt easy to get to and only three bolts.
Takes longer to get the part then put it in
I just think they got a bad batch of Alternators. NAPA is reputable. Soemone may have swapped them out, who knows. I would have 1 tested before you put it in. Maybe buy it, then take it to another place, have them test it, if it is good then put it in. If it goes south, You know its a truck problem, and you can still return it to your purchase place, since they didnt test it, and wont know any better.
The later model trucks have some fuses in the underhood fuse box for the alternators, so check them out also, though that would not explain why the three alternators tested bad.
If the battery is disconnected, while installing it, I dont see how. Unless, a wire has be burned or chewed , or is rubbing on another serface... Like a hot positive rubbing on the engine which is grounded... It may still just be a bad battery.
When you battery is dead, your regulator tells the alternator how much juice it needs to bring it up to full charge. If a new altornator is put in, and the battery is dead. The voltage regulator slams wide open, and the new alternator gets hot, and cooks.
Maybe since you replaced the battery your problems will be solved... How bad was your battery?
Truthfull with you the battery I took out came from advance auto when alt went bad .
It was only 2 years old but after alt went I thought it would be better to put in a new battery.
New as of today
Old battery from advance auto tested as-- volts11.80 --273 cca --rated600cca temp.
they did a 30min charge ----volts 12.85-- 814cca-- 600cca after charge but this battery is not in turck
