I have a 2006 F-150 S/Crew and I seem to have the same intermittant odometer problem as many of the folks in that 1999-2003 group. The odometer comes and goes, flashes intermittantly and sometimes doesn't work for days.
Can it be repaired in the same fashion as those older units? The dealer is more than willing to sell me a new cluster (obviously). They say that there is "no way to possibly repair those odometer problems and we see them all the time."
Without any actual experience with this, here is what I would try. I'm 99% sure that the cluster plugs into the wiring harness. I would get some contact cleaner from the 'shack' or someplace. Unplug and remove the cluster, clean all the contacts and reseat the plug making sure it fits tight. Question, When it starts working again does the mileage jump or does it just pick up where it left off?
The odometer jumps to the new mileage. It seems to be keeping track of the mileage properly even when it is showing a blank display. I will take it apart and clean the contacts. I don't know if you can get to the back of the circuit board to check any of the solder joints?
Has anybody had any luck figuring this one out for the 2005 F150? I took out the the instrument panel and put some contact paste on the wiring harness plugs as well as making sure the bulb was properly seated and still no luck. The back light works fine but the digits don't display....seems to be worse when it rains or is extremely hot weather.
My guess would be you have another place that is causing a short. You may have hit on one but it seems like you missed a spot or the one you fixed didn't take care of the job.
i have a 2006 ext. cab with 4.6 xl package. i also have had the same problem everyone else has had, i have seen enough complaints with such a vital component of all vehicles, that ford should issue a recall, its nothing new theyve experienced this problem with these type odometers for almost the last decade. I first noticed it about a month after purchasing the truck used from local dealership, with just over 38,000 miles. It would flash interemitenly without provocation, rough intersections, hitting potholes at 40mph. Then i noticed it would malfunction if it sat at work all day in the sun with windows rolled up outside air temp 85. Then it would go out for days come back on for a day or less then out again till it didnt come back on. Everytime it did come on i could tell that it was recording the mileage. Is there a diy fix for this?
Some people have had to just replace the whole cluster to fix the problem it has something to do with a bad batch from the manufacturer I think. Anyway there are no after market products for this I think so you have to get one from Ford and it cost about $300. I believe this is what someone was quoted I may be getting my numbers confused but that sounds about right.
I have replaced a few clusters over the years for lost display with working backlite. But the great majority of the clusters I have seen with illumination problems and only took replacing the little bulb on the back of the cluster. Takes about 1/2 hour of your time. If the backlite is green and no digits its cluster time. Like someone stated about 300.00 with exchange doit yourself. Ive never seen a repeat failure of one and have only replaced maybe 5 for this over all the years from 2004 and we service a LOT of trucks.
