Family has a 1988 Fleetwood limited with a 460/ C6 combo. Transmission searches too often when under load on the highway ( up a grade). Was brought to a shop, Had trans rebuilt. not long down the road trans went again. Too many problems with last rebuilder taken to a different shop. Trans rebuilt again, still searches. Shop guy is now saying it's the box on the tail end of trans which i'm guessing is a gear reduction setup and wants about $3000. Seems like they are going to just try and replace stuff and hope it gets fixed along the way. Going to look at it today and was hoping for some ammo to back myself up
The "box" on the end of the trans sounds like it may be a gear vendor over drive unit. If it is in fact an over drive, you need to know how to operate the unit correctly. Gear Vendor will send you the booklet if you contact them.
A C-6 should not be searching for gears. Downshifting is done mechanically with a rod attached to the carb and trans. A vacuum modulator also assists in shifting.
I'm thinking if there is an aftermarket over drive that you are not aware of, incorrect use may have over heated the trans causing the failure.
