Ok, this is a question for a friend who just so happens to have an identical F150 as me only difference is his is an 04 heritage and mine is 99. He is wanting to get a small pull behind camper. Ford says it can pull 3200# which is pretty wimpy lol and not much for a camper. Was wondering what does 3200# get you for a camper? Or any real life figures from anyone with a similar F150 who has pulled a camper.
Some of the small hybrids and most of the pop-ups fall in that range. But really, who buys a full-size pick-up with a v6 and 3.55 rear? Might as well buy a toyota - hell, most minivans will pull 3500 lbs..
Tell him to buy a real truck next time and he won't have to worry about tow ratings.
I pull a 21' trailcruiser selfcontained its weight is 2622 its a newer lighter model its max weight is 4077. there are campers out there, you'll just have to look. My first 3 camping trips where with my 99 nissan 4 cyl that also did pull ok but i new i needed more power.
In Ohio it will do good - - - -but the true test will be when you get into the mountains in KY/TN area with the 6% grades for miles both up and downhill. Brakes is an area that the rating is also based on.
brakes won't change except for maybe if you had the 7700 option. as long as your willing to take it easy and not push it too hard accelerating or hill climbing you have some room over the 3200 rating before you'll hurt anything. its just not going to be a speed wagon. buddy has the v6 truck, he pulled an older scamper, would have been around 3500, pulled in some real mountains, no probs just slow and thirstier than usual
