I have a 2000 Excursion with 132,000 miles. the enigne was making a ticking noise and begain mis-firing. I changed the Plugs since it was overdue anyway, and the problem got much better, However I still have the ticking noise. When I accelearate it even wines like one of those stupid party favors. Sorry for the lack of a better description!. Any ideas if its a bad coil and how I could check that or if I have a major engine problem. All the coils and boots seemed good when I changed the plugs. Thanks for any help.
if you can narrow down where it is actually ticking, that will be a good start. Get your hands on en engine stethiscope (like a doctor uses to listen to your heart)....they are cheap. carefully place the pickup on the stethiscope on each cylinder top and see what you hear.
Of course I left out important information. If i'm in park and rev the engine it sounds fine at any RPM, no funny "ticking" noises. When I get in drive and go the noise begins. Trucks shifts smooth and seems to have good power, no clunking or banging from the trans.
+1 on checking the exhaust manifolds. See if you can narrow it down to a side and go from there. With a good light looking from top and bottom you should be able to see all or very close all of your studs. When this happened on one of my 5.4 Expy's, the gasket was actually missing from the top of the #4 cylinder. I noticed soot starting to form on the engine and once torn down I could see the missing portion of the gasket. If you have to tear anything down - spray liberally with a penetrating oil like PB Blaster - do it over a period of a couple of days - spraying and letting it sit to loosen up the bolts. Good luck.
you are correct just found some missings studs and can actually see some soot. Well i'm far from a mechanic so any idea on what a shop SHOULD charge to replace these gaskets and make these repairs would be great. Thanks for the great info at least I have an idea whats going on.

I would guess a 1-1.5 hours per broken stud. It's not a hard job with the correct tools but a very time consuming one. I would bet it'd go much easier/faster if the mechanic lifted the body off the frame. But that depends on which ones are broken.
If you're gonna do it, might as well put some headers on. The eBay headers are cheap and get pretty good reviews from users here.

Good to hear you have located the source of the ticking so the half the battle is done now fixing or getting it fixed is the next half.
I just got mine done last year. Took it to a local muffler shop that also does allot of custom exhaust work too. They took both manifolds off and pulled (some had to be drilled and extracted out) and replaced all 20 studs, planned the manifolds to make sure they were flat and reinstalled. Total cost was $650. Well worth it IMO.
OK all fixed! Got the truck back today and I'm now happy because my engine no longer makes funny scary sounds. Two of the manifold bolts had rusted off and had to be drilled along with all the studs being replaced. Cost me more then I would have liked, $700. Labor was $90/Hr but my truck is back, working great and I'll be able to go to Dover for the race in a few weeks. Thanks to everyone for the info it was a huge help!
