i have a 79 f150 that i put a 1971 460 in. what is the horsepower and torque rating on this engine because this thing ia a monster even with 35s. also i am having a problem when the truck is warm the starter cranks very slow and sometimes wont start the truck. it sound bad warm or cold... i need some helpful advice... thanks ford lovers
whats the deal with heat soak? and how do i get ride of the problem cause i already messed with those things. and it starts good cold so how could it be bad ground?
If you're running headers without a heat shield on your starter then heat soak can be an issue though i've never had a problem with heat soak running headers w/o a heat shield on my 390 for over 7 years now, but it does occur.
A weak, bad, corroded, rusty or greasy ground connection may be ok when the engine/starter is cold but can cause hard starting issues when the engine/starter is hot.
How much initial advance are you running? any starter kick back when the engine's hot?
Giving the engine about 1/4 throttle on the gas pedal when starting a hot engine helps too.
On my 460's i run welding cable for the battery connections and a good cable for the starter connection and it definetely makes a difference. The small wires in the welding cable carry the current very well and haven't had problems since then. It's 00 cable if I remember correctly.
ok yeah i get some starter kickback when its warm.. i may be way off base here but what about the ground strap that usually goes from the back of the block to the cab? or does it go to the frame i cant remember, either way its been gone for awhile
I have a 69 460 in my 77 F250 4x4 and same problem timming back it off and it will start right up hot or cold and you arent going to lose all that power
Which ignition are you running in this? The factory ignition is designed to back the timing down during a start to prevent this hot start issue. It is also possible that you have an advance in the dizzy that is not working properly. A stuck dizzy can create some problems such as you describe.
Check timing and advance lately?
I used to run a timing control from MSD before I went ot a mini starter.
