so i just got a 1985 bronco full size with a 351w its got about 95k on the motor and trany. i was wondering what all i would need to do to make it fuel injected? i would like a list so i could shop online and local junk yards. also does any one know how many cataltic converters are on this ford. and would i be able to cut them off? thanks
You would be better off getting a donor truck with the injected 351. Lots of wiring, cumputer, and plumbing. As for the converters, if you go with the EFI setup you will need them. If not, you can cut them off but you better watch the local laws and emmission testing.
You don't need the cats for EFI, but it's against the law to remove them and if you get caught it's a big fine.
Converting to EFI is a lot of work. You would need: upper & lower intakes, fuel rail, injectors, complete wiring harness & all sensors, throttle body, computer, fuel lines to the tank, either an external high pressure pump to use with your existing tank or a new gas tank with an in-tank high pressure pump (the better setup IMO), distributor, and about a dozen other things that I'm forgetting.
My '85 has a 302EFI (half of the 302's in '85 had carbs, the other half were EFI). As mentioned, you should only need a working O2 sensor to keep the EEC-IV computer happy with the EFI, and would not need cats for running purposes. You would need them for legality purposes, as also mentioned. My original exhaust had two (or, as I see it, one and a half) inline: one was a regular cat, the other was a smaller pre-cat. I replaced the whole setup with Bassani headers, high-flow Y-pipe, and high-flow [single] cat with a single 3" in/dual 2.5" out Flowmaster 50 muffler.
You are better off getting a bronco that is EFI. 85-up 5.0(302)EFI. 87-up(I think) all EFI
you have to change almost everything. the entire fuel system, the entire ignition system, a large amount of the engines top end
