Here's mine mounted up on the Stereo Deck (made with bed planks and Polished SS Strips) It's just a cheezy 3 1/2" Sunpro but looks and works great - $30!
shift her the way i do my large cars { aka my work trucks , 6wheel to 18 } by ear . wouldnt know what a tach is. it wouldna be that other dial with numbers next to my speedo would it ??? thought it was a metric speedo .................................
If you look in the large hot rod supply house catalogs, AutoMeter and others make tachs with 0 - 6,000 ranges, but all are 12v. I don't know of any "factory" tach for any flathead. In the '60's Sun made a 6v "electronic" tach that was inaccurate and unreliable, they go for huge bucks now, whether they work or not. I had one back then and threw it away.
I've heard there are diesel tachs that have lower ranges, but they aren't ignition triggered, which might solve the 6v problem, maybe not. They run off a flywheel starter ring gear signal and have to be calibrated. I don't know why no one makes one more appropriate for flatties, since they are such a large market.
