I hauled a 57 Chevy pick-up on one of their trailers. It had no trouble fitting on it. However, the last tow dolly I used was for my 88 Fiero and the dolly was barely wide enough.

Oh- check the tires very well before you leave the renter's place. Mine had a huge slit in it that I discovered 400 miles from home. I took it to a local U-haul place en-route and was pretty much told, "good luck-I hope you make it!"

my brother in law and i rented a uhaul car hauler trailer to transport a '49 ch*vy 3100. uhaul's prob was we wanted to haul it with a ch*vy silverado, when we told them ext cab 4x4, we were ok (weight of towing vehicle is an issue too i guess). the truck probably weighed a lot less than factory with all the rust outs on ti. we hauled from buffalo to eastern ny in a snowstorm (freezing rain, fog, thunderstorm) last march. i didn't mind, he had helped me tremendously with my '49 f-1. haven't quite converted him yet.

I always tell them I am hauling a dodge neon...In fact, the guy at the local uhaul store told me to put that down. I have hauled a couple of f-100s on a uhaul transport pulled by my Grand Cherokee (5.2 V8) and had no issues whatsoever

The people who work at these rental places have no concept of what you have or what you need...they rely soley on what the computer tells them. Unfortunately the people who program the computer are just as clueless when it comes to anything prior to 1990. Furthermore, these large rental companies usually will not rent a car trailer to someone who is not using one of their trucks to pull it. I get around all this BS by renting a regular moving van style truck and putting the pickup I am transporting in the back. As an example, a 53 F100 chassis is about 2 inches shorter than the box on a 16 foot Penske rental truck...the box is more that wide and high enough for the pickup and the cost of the whole rental truck is not much more than the cost of a car trailer.

I hauled my 53 f100 on a uhaul trailer. I used my moms 06 xterra, I told them I was hauling a 88 camry haha. Went from Richmond, VA to Maryland so was a longer haul and mostly interstate. No issues with fitting, pulling, or stopping. Because it sat high it did get a little twitchy above 65 no biggie though. Just did 60 and was a smooth drive.

I rented a fair sized open cargo trailer from a local (Chesapeake, Va.) location. They told me that they had to inspect my truck before they could rent me a trailer. I told the kid "there it is" and pointed out the dually to him. I told him I could haul anything on their lot including the low boy equipment trailer.

Dealing with Uhaul can be a nightmare.

I always use '93 Saturn SL1...virtually anything can pull that and I have one just in case! They will not rent to you unless you declare this and needless to say '49 F1 is not on their list.

On the other hand, be reasonable, their car haulers will easily handle the F1 both in size and weight but the trailer alone is over 2200 lbs. Add the 3700 lbs or so for the truck and you can see this is no small task.

IMHO the concern with the tow vehicle has more to do with the hitch rating than the power of the vehicle. Typically a SUV or even some pickups have only a class 2 hitch, which is not strong enough to handle the load. The U haul trailer itself is quite heavy and when you add the weight of the truck on it, the load can easily > 7000#. A class 2 hitch may be able to pull that load on smooth ground, but road irregularities can add substantial sudden strain, much like a slide hammer. I rented a bobcat from an equipment rental ~ 1 mile from my house once and picked it up on a trailer with my van equipped with a class 2 hitch. I got it home no problem, but when I returned it I caught a low median divider curb while making a turn and the sudden load ripped the hitch completely off the truck and it cut a huge gash in the tire sidewall to boot. The rental place charged me the full delivery and pickup charge I was trying to avoid, to come get their trailer 1/4 mile from their lot.
