I have a 77 f150 and changed steering to 78. Keep busting the hp line on the stainless side right where it makes the 45 deg bend, by the pump (metal pump). Changed the pump(plastic res) and hp hose out to 78 style and now instead of the hose busting all the fluid is coming out the top of the pump filler hole. Any ideas? Could a bad steering box cause this?
I had a similar problem after replacing both pump and box. Kept blowing the low pressure line, and even blew the dip stick cap off. Turned out the system needed to be purged/bleed. The advice I got here helped. Raise the front wheels off the ground on jackstands. Start the truck, keep in park/nuetral, block rear tires. Turn the steering wheel lock to lock ten or so times slowly. This helped alot, but even after doing this, It still took driving quite a bit to get all the air out of the system.
I did jack up the front and turn the wheel lock to lock like 20 t0 30 times but I did it manualy and it still busted the line. I'll try it running this time. thanks
The other problem I had was the rubber stopper in the top of the cap sealed against the cap (I think because of age). I think this allowed pressure to build up inside the pump, which in turn blew the cap off the pump, and probably the low pressure line. Try taking the dip stick out, and see if you still have pressure build up.
