Thats great advice trucker.I assume its the same on the windsor? I see you did the 4.6 to 5.4 swap, I was considering it but chickened out and did a windsor to romeo 4.6 instead. Was yours a hard swap? Any tricks you learn on that one?
actually i chickened out to i have to update that lol the 5.4 is the one i got for the swap but i also chickened out i didnt wanna mess anything up so i have that spare plus my old "blown" motor it ran but real rough n had an oil leak.. ne way i reaserched alot here on the swap and it seems faily easy if you have done motor job's before it should be a peice of cake just exhaust and some vacc stuf i think need 2 be changed or delt with beside the computer. and a motor mount may be diffrent... how did the windsor swap go
The swap tok a long time .I found if I do it again I'll take off the intake manifold , it's so tight into the tunnel it takes a shoehorn to get it in and out with the intake on. Also I learned you need to change the flywheel, 6 bolts romeo and 8 windsor. The valve covers are not interchangeable between motors either. I replaced a 97 windsor with a 98 romeo and otherwise they were identical. Thanks for the timing chain advice I'll look at your utube demo soon.
lol i knew that stuff to i kinda forgot to mention it tho
the intake part is a must and so is bringin in the new valve cover's from new engine and the flywheel is like 50 bux from a parts store.. (flex plate whatever) im almost done installing it as we speak it starts and runs so timing is dead on but it makes a scratching sound like that plate is rubbing underneath.. i hope its from no trans fluid
.. apparently its the same as for the 4.6 which i have a video for on youtube its vid 3 search truckeradg86 and watch the motor job pt 3 and you will see the timing marks on the motor... and i kno it works cause she s runni9ng great today!!!
Vacuum gauge
Compression Test
Leak Down
In that order. Vacuum should be around eighteen at idle then drops off when you snap the throttle and goes over eighteen mementarily as you release the throttle and ends up back at eighteen.
Compression is a range of values with no cylinders outside the average of all eight by more than ten or fifteen percent at the most, less is better.
If you have some cylinders that fail add a few squirts of oil and repeat to see if the reading goes up.
You can do a leak down on the ones that fail the compression test.
You might have the timing off on one bank and less likely both banks.
If these tests pass you need to look elsewhere for your problem other than cam timing.
If your check engine light is not on, there is no code for a scanner to read. Your options are to figure it out yourself, or take it to the dealer where they have the higher level diagnostic equipment.
The check engine light may not come on for a bad COP. I helped my brother in law with his 2000 V-10 as it had a similar shake and loss of power. The OBD II scan tool available at any auto parts store will detect a bad COP and tell you which cylinder it is.
This is how it happened on his F-350.
I'm more inclined to believe that the chain may be off a tooth or two.
hey all I replaced my head gaskets on a 02 5.4L I rdid the timing from scratch all is ok when I rotate the engine by had except at a certain point the R side chain seems to slap the guide I have the timing marks and the chains on correct but it slaps the top guide why is this doing this? I set the L side up the same way and it works great R side is at 11oclock L side is at 12 oclock crank time mark at 6 oclock dark 2 links straddle the time marks on the cam and single dark link on crank time mark at 6oclock chain tension-ers both work please help got to have it runnign by sunday night so I can get to work thanks all
