My wife just bought a 97 exp and I noticed that it seems to have a vibration while sitting in gear at idle. I haven't owned a Ford with a 5.4 in it so I'm not sure what it should be like. I took it back to the dealer and they said they found a weak coil. Got it back yesterday and it is the same. I'm trying to figure out if I'm just being to sensitive. I did jump in a friends 97 that has a 5.4 and I felt the same vibration, but it wasn't as pronounced. Any ideas. Thanks in advance.
Vibration at idle is not normal. I have a '97 with 107K miles on it, I bought new, and it has never vibrated at idle. It is so smooth and quiet I have to check the tach to see if it is running.
Hope this helps.
Check your PCV hose assembly. There is a rubber reducing fitting on the back of the intake manifold that has been known to deteriorate and leak. While your at it you might as well check the entire assembly. This is a common problem and you can get the whole Assembly from Ford for a reasonable price. It is very difficult to get to the back of the manifold and see, so you will have to rely mostly on feel. Hope this helps!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-Dec-02 AT 10:45 PM (EST)]I second the PCV hose assembly - I haven't personally dealt with the problem, but I've heard several stories of Ford Dealerships wanting to replace most of the engine, when in fact the problem is a $40 hose assembly. Also, a weak/dying coil could give you some funky vibration, but it usually will set off the idiot light, so I'd check the hose assembly. Also, 4x4freak knows his stuff - listen to him.
Hey Matt, Appreciate the compliment buddy! I'd have to say that the PCV assembly is likely the culprit, because he didn't mention anything about a vibration while driving or off idle, this would suggest a faulty coil.
