Rough Idling, Help Please!!

Ok no mods, The past couple of weeks my truck has been idling rough. After the truck has sit for a while, when I turn the key to warm glow plugs my check engine light comes on before I crank it. After it cranks it runs ok, but not great. Today I turned the truck off, and cranked it back up the check engine light went out, but the truck ran very rough. I drove home and when i pulled in the drive it seemed to be fine. I just changed the oil and fuel filter. It was doing it before that. In the past the UVCh came undone, but its not the same as that. Need some help on what to look for. About the only time I notice it is when I'm stopped and idling or barely giving it fuel.

Thanks for any suggestions
Chad

Can you pull codes?
Unplug your ICP and see if there is oil in the top of the sensor or see if the motor runs better with that sensor unplugged.

One thing these trucks don't like is sitting, for long periods that is. Anything else, smoke, how about the air filter, oil change like mentioned by Jay. How fresh is the fuel?? Just throwing some things out there..

Agreed, these engines are very dependant on clean, fresh, correct classification oil to run right.

A malfunctioning IPR could also cause rough idle.

I have already changed both Oil and the Fuel Filter. Air I changed about two oil changes. I change oil every 5000 miles. There's no smoke. It seems like after long runs it don't do it any more.

I will try to pull the codes, but don't have a scanner. A buddy of mine does, so I'll try to get him to pull them.

I'll try to check the sensors mentioned.

Thanks
Chad

Could be a malfunctioning injector. Just found thhat to be my problem with similar symptoms. I tried to get codes with my $30 scanner but nothing. Went to a friend with a scanner that cost thousands. It allows to chatter the injectors to see if they are operating. Low and behold #5 is sticking. He is seeing more and more problems with the new fuel formulation which has had the luibricating properties removed. He suggests 4 oz of 2 stroke oil per 20 gallons in fuel. Or, a product meant to lube injectors. Never tranny fluid, it has a seal expander and can damage the injector.

Rather than 2-stroke oil, running 2% blend of biodiesel is absolutely the best lubricity enhancer you can find for the new ULSD. Right behind that are a few others which have shown extremely excellent lubricty improvements (Opti-Lube XPD, etc.). DieselKleen is more readily available, though, and demonstrated good results as well.

From what I've read on other posts, I'm thinking of pulling the ICP Sensor and checking it out. But not real sure where it is. From what I've found its right behind the turbo isn't it?

One thing that I don't understand is it clears up after running for a while. Or if I drive it frequently. If I let it sit for a couple of days it will do it again.

Thanks
Chad
