was daydreaming today out here at the lake and a thought occurred to me. Yes I know...dangerous.
what are the major differences between a 2V 5.4 and a 2V 4.6? Primarily will the intakes interchange? Are there any sensors that are different between say a 2003 model 5.4 and a 2005 4.6? Mounted differently perhaps?
I really do love my pick-up, and I figure I am gonna do my best to wear out that motor and tranny instead of trading it in. Now I know that the 8.8 and 4r70 will live very well behind a 2V 5.4...especially as I don't tow, and even if I did, it would be at the worst an 18' pontoon boat...so I figure that I get a standard dressed 5.4 2V and slide it in when the 4.6 gets too tired or losing compression etc etc. can anyone see any potential pit-falls with this swap?
Its like the difference between a 302 and a 351w. the 5.4 has a higher deck like the 351w, so the intake is wider if you are going to do the swap, the computer should be changed also (different calibrations). If you do the swap i would try to get engine, wiring and computer and try to stay with the same year truck if possable. Its not as easy an the older trucks with carbs on them.
And you're dealing with an engine from the previous F150 model and trying to put it into the new body style. Not sure if the FEAD is the same. Since the 04+ has a new 5.4L 3V, some of the block attachments maybe different from the 5.4 2V. I would look for a 3V and put that in, but as Mr Ford states, get the PCM, wiring harness, etc. If you were to get the 2V, you wouldn't have a calibration to run the truck.
This engine This PCM. This transmission. Maybe swap the differential out with this. Just have to rub some butter around the engine/trans to get it to fit.

huh...if I touch blackie like that, she will be all over me...in a bad way...
As I have told you before, I no longer have a truck...I have an Escape...albeit a nice Escape.
See I just can't wrap my brain around the deck height...I mean, sure...deck height meant something with a standard OHV vee block...but the intake actually bolts to a parallel flat surface provided by the intake ports of the head. Deck height shouldn't be an issue there. And regardless, majority of the sensors should have analogies since the engine controls for the 2V's remain essentially unchanged from 2004 heritage to 2005 new body. I guess if nothing else I could always find a friendly junk yard. Take a few tools and some calipers, speed square, straight edge and a digital camera and go to town.
If the deck height is higher then the distance between the intake serfaces on the heads are farther apart. Think of the letter 'V' the taller the 'V' the farther apart the tips are.
