Thanks for the help with the tranny flush procedure. I flushed my brothers tranny in his 2001 Ranger and everything went smooth. My brother actually commented that his trucked shifted like butter now.
Thanks for the flowers & good to hear all went well.
My trannies always reward me with improved shifting after a pan drop & cleaning, filter change & full fluid pump out!!!!
It's so easy to do & such a nice weekend "shade tree mechanic" kind of job, heck you know if I can get down there to do it, anyone can & our tranny sure will appreciate the attention & will likely reward us with improved shifting & longer life!!!!
Perhaps others reading of your success will be encouraged to give it a go for their rides too!!!!
Just a quick note: Which line in the reuturn line on the tranny cooler? I was not sure but, was able to put all the fluid anyway. This way was the cleanest tranny flush that I have done. I used a empty Mobil 1 5 quart jug, it has the quart marks on the side and the clear line to see the fluid. I pumped 3 quarts and disposed of the fluid into a 15 quart oil change container. I repeated until 10 quarts were pumped. Easy and clean
The line that runs from the cooler back to the tranny, is the cooler output return line. Disconnecting it at the cooler enables us to also flush the cooler during the pump out.
If you disconnected the line coming from the radiator to the input side of the cooler, it would work too, but we wouldn't get a cooler flush that way.
The hot fluid line from the tranny goes to the top radiator connection fitting & the line goes through the cooled side of the radiator coolant tank to pre-cool the tranny fluid, exiting the bottom radiator tank connection fitting, then over to the input side of the aux tranny cooler, through it & then the cooled fluid flows back to the tranny through the return line.
Good to hear it went well & was a clean job. Did you also do a pan drop & filter change????
yes I dropped the pan. I removed the line from the aux. cooler below the radiator. I had a spare piece of hose that put on the cooler nipple to make sure all the fluid went in to the oil jug.
OK, good, sounds like you did a good complete tranny flush/ fluid pumpout!!!!
How did the pan deposits look, with the mileage he had on it????
The reason I ask is that my Rangers 5R55E tranny is on it's first cycle of the new dual use Mercon-V/Mercon fluid recipe & I'm curious how it's likely to hold up.
truck has approx. 57,000 miles and the pan covered with metal dust. Cleaned up good and refilled with mercon V from ford. I ran 11 quarts through it to ensure a complete flush. I then pumped a quart out and replaced the cooler line. So, far the tranny is doing fine. He is going to watch the level for the next couple of day to make sure the fluid is at the right level. The dipstick on the 2001 calls for straight mercon V
OH good grief, it's an 01, somehow I had in my feeble mind it was an 04 & thought maybe it had the new recipe Mercon-V/Mercon fluid in it, so if it's not been changed before, your right it likely had the old recipe Mercon-V fluid in it.
Ford changed the Mercon-V recipe a few years ago to make it a dual use fluid, so it could be used in both Mercon-V & "Mercon" fluid applications, as Ford/Motorcraft no longer make/market Mercon fluid.
So if you used Motorcraft tranny fluid, it's likely the new dual use Mercon-V/Mercon recipe.
My new recipe Mercon-V/Mercon came in a black bottle with red/white labeling, rather than the usual Red Motorcraft bottles.
Sounds like the origional recipe Mercon-V held up well if the tranny still shifts well & there was only a little clutch dust in the pan bottom & some paste on the pan magnet, which is normal.
Thats what my 5R55E tranny pan looked like when I dropped it for service at 5years/30K miles & it was the OEM factory fill Mercon-V.
Will be interesting to hear how the new recipe fluid holds up.
I'm about about half way through my normal 30K mile tranny OCI & the new dual use recipe Motorcraft fluid seems to be holding up ok for my use.
It gets a good bit of short service around town driving, with some light- medium tugs, towing my Bass Tracker in the mountains tossed in, so my fluid gets exercised pretty good & I've been looking for input on how this the new recipe fluid holds up for other folks.
Yeah we will see how the new formula works. Now I need to flush the 4R100 in my 2004 F250. The 250 takes the old mercon so, I will see how the new mercon V works in it. It should do better with the syn. fluid in it vs. the dino oil.
