You might know I just got the new clutch in before RRE and have been breaking it in and today I was out and about and pushed the clutch to put it in 2nd at a stop light and the pedal hit the floor and the truck kept pulling so I said WTH and mashed the brakes and killed it. I pulled the pedal back up with my hand and then mashed it and it seemed weird so I started the truck and moved on to the next gear and it did it again so I figured it to be he slave cylinder so I had 5 more lights to get thru before I got out to the country. I had to take off from a dead stop using the starter at 3 lights in 2 gear and then I would just time it in order to change gears (NOT FUN) but we got home.<O</O So whats yalls thoughts and where is the slave cylinder replacement instruction. I have heard of a prebled unit but I think it was pretty high. I called AZ and its $62.00 but I hear they are a pain to bleed. I checked the fluid and it was full the spring is still on and I mashed the pedal by hand with the truck off and I can hear a hissing noise like a seal leaking.<O</O
Eddie, I gasped when I seen this thread title. Glad you get big red home, don't know to much about the hand shakers but here's another goodwill bump, good luck my friend. Subscribing..
Eddie, well come to the club. Mine failed while tryin to back the 5th wheel into a camp spot! replace the master and the slave. its not hard. watch the pedal when you unhook the rod to the master. It can pop back and smack you in the mouth. Bleeding is not as big a deal as everyone makes it out to be. with the master installed in the truck let the slave hang. fill everything with oil. from under the truck push the slave rod in slowly and let it back out. do this 20-25 times. checking the fluid after the first 10 strokes. once bled twist the slave back into the bell housing and check operation. is its still "mushy" pull the slave and repeat.
I've done mine twice and several others this way and it works great.
Mine went right after a clutch replacement too. For anyone else reading this, just go ahead and replace the clutch hydraulics when you do the clutch.
It seems like the pre-bled master / slave assembly was around 150 from Ford, and it's a simple plug and play installation. The only tricks are understanding there is a little plastic cap on the end of the push rod inside the bell housing, so when you pull the slave cylinder out, do it slowly and don't accidentally slide the plastic cap off down inside the housing. The other thing is the spring loaded pedal that Barney mentioned. It stays on the floor just fine, but if you bump it and it goes past that breakover point, the spring will send the pedal rocketing up toward the dash and any chin that might be in the way.
Thanks for the support guy's. Barney I bet you about crapped when that happened backing with a load on. I am glad I was empty. I agree with Chris just go ahead and change the slave cylinder when changing the clutch. My son couldn't believe I didn't. O well he is a young smart guy that knows it all. Does any one have the instructions on doing this I will probably get the AZ part and get it on tomorrow. or ASAP
Sure, grab a pair of channel locks and give a 1/4 turn CCW on the slave and it will come out of the bell housing. Remember the plastic tip on the rod. As you start to SLOWLY remove the slave from the bell housing, stick your finger in there and hold the plastic piece on there. No bleeder screw, so as Barney mentioned, when you get the new slave on the line, pump the rod slowly 20 - 35 times ensuring it's at the low point and the bubbles have time to work thier way up to the top.
Got me a little worried their Eddie I thought your son might of really had something to gloat about LOL. Glad it was nothing serious my friend and I hope you get her fixed up tomorrow, BTW good job on getting her home I would have cringed at seeing your truck hooked behind his dodge.
