OK, I'm in the process of removing the bed from my '96 250 4WD and got all 5 out with no problems whatsoever...however, the last one (it's always that one, isn't it)? is killing me! Its the one in the middle, the short, carriage-bolt on the drivers side. I had to get a swivel u-joint socket to get up to it and torqued the hell out of it. Finally it broke loose, only for me to discover that I was spinning it...apparently the square on the top of the bolt rounded and now its spinning in the hole...are there ANY tricks/cheats/tools etc to get this last one out? I blew the better part of today doing this!
Thanks
Roger
Ive seen people weld a nut onto the top of the carriage bolt to put a wrench on there and hold it while they take the nut off the threads.
[edit] Conanski beat me by a second...
I had the same problem on mine. I took a cut off wheel and cut the lip off of one side of the carriage bolt. Then I took a screwdriver and jammed down beside the bolt. When it spun it hit the screwdriver it stopped. All I had to do then was remove the nut.
Put a wrench on the head and mark the head then cut the two sides off and hold it in place w/ wrench and zip the nut off. You'll need a helper. Replace the bolts w/ the new style torx head incase you ever have to do this again. Also put anti-seeze on threads when you put it back together.
when i took mine out, lets just say that a grinder and a B.F. punch were my best friends... grind down the bolt close to the bed but not on grinding on the bed.... position punch on center of grinded down bolt.... whack with a rather large hammer.. and presto! no more bed bolt.... in fact i am still missing that bed bolt on my truck to this day..... i want to replace all of them with the newer f150 bed bolts that have the torx head on em, but am having trouble finding a set... anyways, best of luck to ya!
ya......rite...... i tried that with a combo of pb blaster.....long story short it was a waste of gas and pb.... it was right about then i grabbed my handy dandy grinder...
Grinding the head of is just going to F*%@# you. It woulnt go thru the bed(carrage shank) . Weld a nut to the head and hold it w a wrench, then just buy regular bolts to replace the carage bolts.
Hey, the title of this thread sounded like me when I took my bed off back in the spring! I had 3 spinning... and no welder to attach a nut as someone suggested, GREAT IDEA...
One of them turned a little before it spinned so i just slipped a hacksaw under the head and sawed the head off. The other two I drilled out, was a lot of drilling but it will work.
I just used regular head bolts when I put it back together. Bedliner covers them anyway, no need for fancy bolts, not to mention you can take it apart again easier.
